If there are two sides to every story, someone is always lying…
Jack: Three words to describe my wife: Beautiful. Ambitious. Unforgiving.
Anna: I only need one word to describe my husband: Liar.
Someone is lying, and some secrets are worth killing to keep.
My Thoughts
I’ve been a big fan of Alice Feeney since reading Beautiful Ugly, so picking up His & Hers was an easy decision. After recently meeting Alice at the launch of her new book My Husband's Wife, I was even more excited to dive into one of her earlier thrillers, and it definitely didn’t disappoint.
His & Hers is one of those books that immediately pulls you in and refuses to let go. The story follows Anna Andrews, a BBC newsreader who suddenly finds herself reporting on a murder in the small town she grew up in. Meanwhile, Detective Jack Harper is leading the investigation, and the victim happens to be someone they both knew. As the case unfolds, it becomes clear that almost everyone involved has secrets, and the truth is far more complicated than it first appears.
What makes this book particularly gripping is the dual POV. Feeney expertly alternates between Anna and Jack’s points of view, creating constant tension and making you question everything you think you know. Just when you feel confident you’ve worked something out, another twist appears and sends the story in a completely different direction.
I genuinely struggled to put this one down. The pacing is fast, the chapters are short and addictive, and the suspense builds brilliantly throughout. Like many of Feeney’s books, the plot is full of clever twists and turns, and the final reveals are both shocking and satisfying.
One of the things I really love about Alice Feeney’s writing is the way she plays with perspective. The same events can look completely different depending on who’s telling the story. In His & Hers, she does this brilliantly, constantly making you question what’s actually true and who you can really trust.
Overall, this was a brilliant psychological thriller that kept me guessing until the very end. If you enjoy twisty mysteries with unreliable narrators and plenty of surprises, this is definitely one to add to your reading list.
I’m also really looking forward to watching the Netflix adaptation. I've seen some amazing reviews, so I'm hopeful that the translation of the tension and twists of the story will convert brilliantly to the screen.
